Carondelet Park in St. Louis, Missouri has a rich history, including its Spanish land grant origins, role in the Civil War, and its status as the last original landscape in the city's park system. At 180 acres Carondelet park was established in 1876. There is currently little information available on this bridge, hopefully that will change now that it has been conserved. A wonderful example of Tuscan order entablature, the intricate details of its balustrade wall inset borders are featured on all sides. The Palladian proportion column style anchors include cavetto curves leading to terminating crowning caps that were all a joy to restore.
This bridge was originally made hand formed with cementitious materials mixed on site. Being well over 100 years old city engineers and inspectors were amazed at the strength and quality it retains. It had fallen into cosmetic decline after receiving little attention since a group of neighbors got together to paint it over 30 years ago. Please enjoy these photos of the process and hopefully you can agree this bridge is another one of our city's public treasures.
